July Featured Artist - Ben Aqua: Invasion Of Privacy - On View July 17th - August 6th
Thursday, July 17th - art opening
Ben Aqua: Invasion Of Privacy
opening reception 7-10pm
*In place of any formal entertainment, an original audio soundscape will be provided by the artist.

Using photography and time-based media, Ben Aqua's work explores the notion of identity formation and its relationship with fear. Often influenced by the eccentricities that occur in the development of personal identity, he depicts how these characteristics translate aesthetically and metaphorically within the subjects' immediate environments.
"In modern Western culture, we are bred with a fearful mentality; fear of death, fear of terrorism, fear of homosexuality, etc. I believe there is something tremendously powerful about the honest discovery of one's self that allows us to overcome all fear. This process of fearless self-identification that I see in others is something my work constantly explores, acting as a sort of psychological mirror in which I investigate my own humanity."
Even further, Ben's work exists within the context of our rapidly evolving technological world where identity bleeds into the virtual realm. The Internet and online media act as a wide-open virtual playground devoid of time and space. In this vein, he explores methods in which technology extends the concept of identity formation, offering the theoretical luxury of anonymity and a sort of lush, blank canvas for fulfilling one's own destinies.

Pics comming soon!!!! it was amazing...things to note: the fire marshall came by and talked my ear off for at least a 1/2 hour. nothing happened, but we will be redoing The Cave ceiling very soon in some flame retardent way. Thurston Moore played w/ Sunburn Hand Of The Man - an addition for friday's show. Kevin Shields played a 16mm sync block. Bill Jeffery is the hardest rocker in town! and Peach Cake was the most fun band ever at The Opera House!!! They got the audience to play a rousing game of duck duck goose, formed a human train and ran arounnd the building, a stunt on the top of the building, tons of props, arm waving, positive messages, stuffed animals, patterns, fun colors...... I'm sure I'm forgetting to mention a ton of amazing stuff that transpied over the last few days. i guess you just had to be there.

Eleventeen: RGV clay in ATX
Opening reception 7-10pm, entertainment tba
@The Opera House
For the month of February The Opera House presents Eleventeen, a group ceramic show that travels 300 miles from deepest South Texas to our hibernation den in South Austin. The show consists of eleven participants prospecting the ceramic medium beyond pottery. Each of Rio Grande Valley artists has, at some point in the recent past, invested effort within the art program at the University of Texas Pan American. Their ceramic sensibilities and chosen approaches may be as engagingly awkward as the show's title. Muddy madness will crowd The Cave placed on pedestals, suspended from the ceiling, and hung on the wall for the capital city’s viewing pleasure. Work will be on view through 2/29.
